Beyond the Activity:

Connecting Autistic Learning to Real-World Goals

As therapists, we often pour our energy into creating engaging and fun activities for our autistic clients. But what if we’re missing a crucial step?

What truly matters is the connection between the activity and the client’s learning goals.

Autistic individuals, unlike non-autistics, often don’t automatically connect an activity to its long-term purpose. This is where we come in as professionals.

It’s not enough to find something fun or motivating on the surface. We need to communicate why we are doing the activity—what it’s teaching, how it can be used, and why it matters in the client’s life.

As Susan explains, the activity is like the vehicle for learning. But without knowing the destination, the activity alone won’t have a lasting impact. If we fail to explain the “why” behind the task, we risk losing the client’s engagement once the session is over. We want to make sure they leave not just with a good time but with skills they understand and find valuable.
