Understanding Autistic Communication Through Actions
I remember watching a client hit their head repeatedly and feeling absolutely helpless. My gut reaction? “Please stop. I don’t want you to hurt yourself.”But underneath that urge to stop the behavior was something deeper—I just wanted to understand.
What I didn’t realize then is that the behavior was communication. It was the child’s way of saying:
“I’m overwhelmed.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
“I don’t feel safe or understood.”
Back then, I was focused on stopping the action. Now, I focus on listening to it.
In this week’s vlog, Susan and I talk about what actions like walking away, pacing, or even self-injury might actually be communicating—and how your response can either shut the door on connection or gently open it.
We’re also sharing a free tool to help decode common non-verbal gestures and behaviors. Whether you’re a parent, professional, or autistic individual, each guide developed for each group is designed to help everyone feel more understood.
And if you’ve ever felt helpless or unsure how to respond to certain behaviors—you’re not alone. But there is another way forward. Let’s explore it together.
