Autism Awareness vs Acceptance: A Simple Shift That Changes Everything

“I thought I was being supportive… until everything fell apart.”

A child was doing well—until a new activity was introduced. Suddenly there was resistance, frustration, even what looked like “behavior.” The adult response? Push through, encourage, redirect. But nothing worked—and everyone left feeling frustrated.

What changed everything wasn’t more strategies—it was a shift in perspective. In the conversation about autism awareness vs acceptance, we realized: We were accepting the child—but not understanding what they were communicating. That “behavior” wasn’t defiance. It was “I’m not ready.”

What helped:

  • Pause and observe: Notice when behavior happens (e.g., only with new tasks)

  • Name the message: “It looks like this might feel hard or unexpected”

  • Offer support options: “Do you want me to show you first?”

👉 Watch the full video to see how this small shift can completely change how autistic individuals respond—and how supported they feel (especially the example of building a “behavior dictionary”).

Sometimes the biggest change isn’t what we do—it’s how we see.
