MAKING SENSE OF AUTISM

Blog

What supports do you wish you had growing up?

As an adult that wasn't diagnosed until my mid 30s, I wish there had been more screening in public schools to identify people with less outward presenting symptoms, or highly masked individuals.

As a parent of kids that were diagnosed in childhood, then I would want more interaction from the professionals after diagnosis, I think there needs to be more follow-up from the therapist, psychologist, school counselors, etc, to work as a support team for further understanding the "new" differences, accommodations moving forward. Even when I was repeatedly calling offices/providers/teachers, attending the meetings, and researching on my own, it still felt like not enough, and I had to imagine how little I would get and how worse it would be if I didn't do those things of my own accord.
